The EU’s decision to restrict the concentration of retinol in over-the-counter products stems from concerns about its potential for causing skin irritation and harm at higher concentrations. This article from The Independent gives solid information on why this has happened.
The EU’s retinol ban explained | The Independent
If not retinol then what?
Prior to the ruling, I was aware that there were potential problems with retinol and having sensitive skin myself, I decided to see if there were natural alternatives that had similar properties without the potential side effects. After much research I alighted on Bakuchiol. Bakuchiol is a vegan skincare ingredient found in the leaves and seeds of the Psoralea corylifolia plant. It is a potent antioxidant, visibly reduces skin discolourations from environmental exposure, and has a pronounced soothing effect on skin. Bakuchiol stimulates skin cell turnover, smooths fine lines and wrinkles, and improves skin tone and texture. All this without the potential issues around retinol.
I decided to use Bakuchiol in my skin care products Rejuvenating Face Serum and Balancing Night Repair Balm and have had only good feedback.
I hope you found this useful, If you would like to know more I am happy to share so please let me know.
